BES-Technical provided Stage 4 and 5 design services for a new high-voltage intake substation and associated network upgrades at Bournemouth Hospital. The £5m MEP project involved the development of new HV infrastructure, network reconfiguration and future-proofing capacity for planned site expansion.
Scope of work
BES-Technical was responsible for:
- HV fault calculations to BS EN 60909
- BS EN 50522 earthing study for the new substation
- IEEE Std 1584-2018 Arc Flash Analysis
- Load analysis
- Associated drawings, schedules, schematics and calculations
The wider scheme included:
- New N+1 intake switch panels
- Coordination with the IDNO
- New Ring C supplying a new building via N+1 2500kVA transformers
- New Ring D supplying local loads and future development capacity via N+1 1000kVA transformers
- Adaptation and load reduction of the existing Ring A network
The challenge
The project required the integration of new HV infrastructure into a live hospital environment while maintaining network resilience, supporting future development plans and coordinating with multiple stakeholders.
The outcome
Drawing on practical delivery experience and detailed technical analysis, BES-Technical rationalised the proposed design and identified opportunities to improve efficiency without compromising compliance or performance.
The resulting design delivered value engineering benefits that reduced complexity, supported installation and maintenance activities, and improved the long-term operability of the electrical infrastructure.
